The motor show is dead and Monterey killed it. On Friday 14 August 2026, The Quail hosted more world premieres than most international motor shows now manage in a full week — a 1,578 hp one-off Bugatti, a naturally-aspirated manual Hennessey, a new Gordon Murray, a Lamborghini flagship, and a Cadillac you can specify in 160 colours. Here is every one that matters, and what you can actually do about it.

The short version

  • Lamborghini Revuelto SV — the hardcore V12 hybrid flagship, claimed fastest production super sports car around Hockenheimring at 1:41.6.
  • Bugatti Destrier — a road-legal Programme Solitaire one-off with the 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 at 1,578 hp and a roof just 39.4 inches off the ground.
  • Hennessey Blackbird — $2.5m, 71 cars, 800–850 hp naturally aspirated V8, six-speed manual, under 3,000 lb. Production starts 2029.
  • Eccentrica V12 Roadster — open-top Diablo restomod, 5.7-litre V12, manual, 19 cars.
  • Ferrari showed the one-off CZ26 at Pebble Beach; Lamborghini added the 99-unit Revuelto Miura 60° Homage.

Why The Quail matters now

Manufacturers used to save their reveals for Geneva, Frankfurt or Detroit. Those shows have shrunk or vanished, and the audience the industry actually wants — people who can write seven-figure cheques without financing — now assembles voluntarily on the Monterey peninsula every August. Reveal a hypercar at The Quail and the order book can close before the car reaches a press embargo lift.

The customers used to travel to the motor show. Now the motor show travels to the customers.

The hypercars

Bugatti Destrier

Built under Bugatti’s Programme Solitaire — the coachbuilding arm that produces single cars to a single client’s brief — the Destrier made its first public appearance at Monterey. It retains the 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 producing 1,578 hp, stands just 39.4 inches tall, and runs 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. It is road legal. There is one, and it is not for sale.

Lamborghini Revuelto SV

The SV treatment applied to the 1,001 hp plug-in-hybrid V12 flagship, with more power and substantially reworked aerodynamics. Lamborghini arrived at Monterey claiming the fastest production super sports car lap at Hockenheimring, at 1:41.6. Full pricing was not published at reveal.

Gordon Murray Special Vehicles

GMSV showed a new supercar with global debut details held back. Context for the significance: the company’s S1 LM — a 720 hp V12 limited to five cars — and every other production programme Gordon Murray Automotive has announced has already sold out before public reveal.

Hennessey Blackbird

The most interesting specification sheet of the week, because it runs directly against the industry. A naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 making 800–850 hp, a six-speed manual, a kerb weight under 3,000 lb, 0–60 mph in 2.5 seconds and a claimed 220 mph. $2.5 million, 71 units, production from 2029.

The Eccentrica roadster deserves a note. A 550 hp naturally aspirated V12 with a six-speed manual and a claimed 208 mph, built on a Diablo, is a specification no manufacturer will sign off in 2026 — which is precisely why the restomod sector keeps growing into the space the industry is vacating.

The mainstream reveals

  • Acura concept — introduces a new design language developed under creative director Yasutake Tsuchida, which will influence future models beginning with the fourth-generation RDX Hybrid.
  • Bentley Continental Supersports in Dragon livery, and the Bentayga X concept previewing an off-road-focused direction.
  • Curated by Cadillac — a bespoke personalisation programme for the Escalade IQ offering 160+ exterior and 44 interior colours, hand-painted and hand-built, at $54,995 above list.
  • BMW X5 by Kith — a 2000 E53 rebuilt with the 5.0 S85 V10 from the M5, 500 hp, six-speed manual, all-wheel drive, shown alongside a 2027 X5 in Frozen Titanium Silver.
  • Jaguar Type 01 — interior shown publicly for the first time.
  • Honda Heritage Racing — the factory selling actual competition cars, including the 2007 Acura ARX-01 that won Sebring and an NSX GT3 with 38 class wins.

One to treat carefully

A manual McLaren — the brand’s first since the F1 in 1998, reportedly under 100 cars at over $2.1 million — was widely discussed around the week. As of publication it remains unconfirmed by McLaren and firmly in rumour territory. We will report it when there is a car and a press release.

Which of these you can actually get

For most readers the honest answer is that the constraint is allocation, not logistics. Single-car commissions — the Destrier, the Celestiq Night Test, the CZ26, the DB12 S Tribute trio — were spoken for before they were shown. Series cars like the Revuelto SV go through the manufacturer’s own dealer network, and importing one privately gains you nothing.

Where importing genuinely earns its keep is the narrower case: a US-market car with no European allocation at all, or a specification combination that is not offered in your market. The Hennessey Blackbird is the obvious 2029 candidate — a naturally aspirated manual supercar built in Texas in 71 units is exactly the kind of car that never gets a right-hand-drive European programme.

In that case the question stops being “can it be shipped” — it can — and becomes duty, VAT, individual approval and registration tax. Those four line items decide whether a US halo car is a clever acquisition or an expensive lesson. Our landed-cost guides set out the method, and the import cost calculator does the arithmetic.

Chasing a car with no local allocation?

Sourcing cars that were never sold in your market is most of what we do. Tell us the model and specification and we will come back with a full landed cost — purchase, shipping, duty, VAT and registration tax — before you commit to anything. Start a request.
